How to get the most out of your NDIS plan review

Plan reviews can feel daunting, but with the right preparation they're an opportunity to make your plan work even harder for you. Here's what we recommend.

Your NDIS plan review is one of the most important moments in your NDIS journey. It’s your opportunity to tell the NDIA what’s working, what isn’t, and what you need going forward. But many participants go into reviews underprepared — and come out with plans that don’t fully reflect their needs.

Here’s how to make the most of yours.

Start preparing early

Don’t wait until the week before your review. Ideally, start gathering information at least 6–8 weeks out. This gives you time to collect evidence, speak with your providers, and reflect on what you want to change.

Document everything

The NDIA makes decisions based on evidence. That means you need to show:

  • What goals you’ve been working on and how you’ve progressed
  • What supports have been effective and why you need to continue them
  • What hasn’t worked — including providers that let you down or supports that weren’t right for you
  • What has changed in your life, health, or circumstances since your last plan

Ask your current providers for progress notes and reports. Ask your allied health professionals for updated functional assessments if anything has changed.

Be clear about what you want

Before your review, write down:

  1. The goals you want to work towards in the next plan period
  2. The specific supports you need to achieve those goals
  3. Any new supports or funding categories you want to request

The NDIA planner isn’t a mind reader. If you don’t ask for something, you’re unlikely to get it.

Bring someone with you

You’re entitled to bring a support person, carer, family member, or support coordinator to your planning meeting. Having someone there who knows your situation can help ensure nothing important gets overlooked.

If you have a Support Coordinator, they should be involved in preparing for your review. That’s a core part of what Support Coordination is for.

Review your current plan before the meeting

Make sure you understand what your current plan contains — your goals, funding categories, and approved amounts. If you’re not sure what’s in your plan, check the myNDIS app or portal, or ask your support coordinator to walk you through it.

After the review

Once you receive your new plan, review it carefully before accepting. Check that:

  • The funding amounts reflect what was discussed
  • Your goals are accurately captured
  • The correct support categories are included

If something is wrong, you can request a review of the decision. Don’t just accept a plan that doesn’t meet your needs.
